Being the New Kid

Written by Amanda · Program Admin

Being the new kid on the block can sometimes be a little nerve racking and scary, especially when you’re starting at a new place. Getting a feel for other people’s personalities, the space, the flow of things…it can be overwhelming especially in an industry that is completely new. I’ve never worked at a marketing agency, but knew my past work experiences and skill set would serve me well in succeeding.

The Substance Group was all but nerve racking. Everyone was welcoming, the space is creative and the complete opposite of what most offices look like. Rather than being a tetris board of cubicles, the office is fully open concept. In the first few days everyone was super helpful and patient in showing me all our processes and making sure my onboarding was seamless.  Eventually I ended up learning certain things on my own as my colleague on my projects was located off-site and couldn’t easily ‘show’ me how to do things.

The Substance Group created this overall energy that made me enjoy getting up every day and being in a space that is creative and bright.

With the work environment being so different from my previous job, any fears and hesitations I had about starting a new job quickly vanished. The Substance Group created this overall energy that made me enjoy getting up every day and being in a space that is creative and bright. With such a small but powerful team, this tight knit group of people are more than just co-workers. We’re more like a family, with a million different talents and personalities. We get the work done and have fun doing it.

As someone who didn’t have the professional experience of working with events, I did my best to absorb all that I could and from all outlets. From conversations, meetings and daily tasks, I managed to piece everything together into one complete picture.

Always offer to help! Offering help not only allows you to learn new things, it also allows you to stay busy.

If there is one piece of advice that I could give from being the new kid in a completely new city, it would be this : Always offer to help! Offering help not only allows you to learn new things, it also allows you to stay busy. I was so eager to really dive into this industry that I took every opportunity to offer a helping hand. By doing this, it unleashed a few of my hidden talents that I was more than happy to share.

Being the new kid doesn’t last long. Be inviting and welcoming is always a good attitude to have. Be positive and eager to learn new things on top of what you were hired to do. I ensure you that you will enjoy your job that much more. I sure do!
